Putting things off

My New Year’s resolutions this year were: lose weight,  have a huge clear out and run a 5K.  Did I achieve these things? Erm, no.  I’ve still got 2 months left though, right?

What if my failure to achieve my goals could have resulted in a financial penalty, a fine? A fine that I couldn’t get out of… listen-up procrastinators, dreamers and general lazybones, there’s a new online platform available that will give you a kick up the backside – ‘Go Fucking Do It’.

Go Fucking Do It, or GFD, is the slightly twisted, but incredibly innovative idea of entrepreneur and blogger, Pieter Levels. He himself has set a target of starting-up 12 businesses, in 12 months. GFD is one of them. The idea is that you register your life goal, say write a book within 6 months, agree a penalty for non-completion and off you go. If you haven’t written your book within the time period, then you have to cough-up. Now, I know what you’re thinking. “How will GFD know that I’ve not written my book?, I’ll just tell a fib”, well, this is where it starts to get interesting. When you sign-up you have to pledge the amount of the fine, submit your bank details and the details of a referee; someone that will confirm to GFD if you have met your goal. What happens if you have to pay a fine? Well, there’s another GFD twist! It’s fair to assume that your fine would go to a good cause, a charity of your choice perhaps. It doesn’t. It goes into GFD’s coffers. It’s theirs to keep. That could be a motivator couldn’t it?

The aim of the project isn’t a gimmick or a scam; it’s to motivate you. To give you that oomph you need to get out there, live your life and reach for the stars. People are signing-up and if you head to the GFD website, you’ll see that already, over $40,000 has been pledged for projects from running a marathon or quitting coffee to skydiving and starting a blog. People are going for GFD. Can you see why?

People don’t like being punished and after all, that’s what happens if you don’t reach your goal. You’re getting hit in the purse and worse still, the money’s funding some random blogger’s start-up! It’s exciting though, isn’t it? It’s certainly got me thinking. Should I sign-up? Could doing this end my willpower issues and my unhealthy procrastination habit? Oh yes, there’s also another feature of GFD. You can nominate someone else! If there’s a person in your life that is a dreamer yet never takes the plunge, consider challenging them via GFD. You decide the challenge, deadline and the amount of the potential fine.

One thing that learning about this project has made me do is think about me and how I approach my life. I do sometimes need a kick up the arse. I’m not lazy, but I’m prone to dreaming rather than doing. So, drum roll please… before the end of the year, I am going to run a 5K. It might be more like a brisk walk/jog/limp combination, but I’m going to do it.
