Fa la la la la la la la la. It’s that time of year again, folks. CHRISTMAS!! I love Christmas, but not for all the presents and sales and whatnot, I refer to the real Christmas. The Christmas you feel inside where you are snuggled up with a good book or movie, the fire on with the glow of the Christmas tree lights in the background and hopefully snow outside.
Christmas comes around each and every year and for many people it’s the same old same old. You walk into a shop in October and they already have the Christmas songs playing. I love Christmas songs but it’s always the same records that get played, Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You, Wizzard’s I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday, Slade’s Merry Christmas Everybody, you get the picture, the list goes on and on. Now, I’m not saying these are bad Christmas songs, it’s just the same every year.
My top picks for alternate Christmas songs are;
Album: Christmas with The Beach Boys by The Beach Boys
Highlights of the album include the most well known Beach Boys Christmas song, Little Saint Nick, followed by Merry Christmas, Baby and Melekalikimaka. There are more original Christmas songs included in the album but these three are my favourites for their upbeat tempo and originality. The album also includes the classics, White Christmas, Frosty the Snowman and Santa Claus Is Coming To Town but with The Beach Boys famous harmonies and sound, making this album the perfect choice for classics and originals combined. The Beach Boys have to be one of my all time favourite bands, the way they harmonise and create music just speaks to your soul.
Song: I Hope That it Snows by Madi Diaz featuring Keegan DeWitt
Highlights of the song include the fantastic vocal performance (there really seems to be a rawness to the vocals), the awesome musicality and great lyrics. This is a great song to play when you have a group around as even though everyone may have not heard the song before they can still join in to the chorus, “I hope that it snows, ow, ow, ow, ow, ows”. Great fun with an excellent tune.
These are my recommendations for Christmas songs and the ones I will be playing when decorating the Christmas tree and just enjoying the festive cheer. Merry Christmas and happy listening everyone at Women Make Waves!
