We are so lucky to live here in Britain as we have some of the most picturesque and secluded scenery right on our door steps. Even if you live in a bustling city, you are never far from the stillness of the rolling countryside – it is so accessible wherever you live. We are forever being told to do more exercise and to encourage our kids to play outside. Well, cycling is an incredibly cheap and fun way to give you and your family that fresh air and exercise that the doctor ordered. Whether you have highly competitive teenagers in your family or young children who have just learnt to ride their bikes, there are cycles routes all over the UK that are suited to families with members of all ages.
If you live near the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire area, The Phoenix Trail between the two counties is certainly one of the most family friendly cycle routes in the UK. Yes, it maybe seven miles in length, but it is a smooth and flat ride. As well, there are many benches and picnic areas along the way – perfect if those legs get tired or if you just fancy a cup of tea!
If you have some rather competitive members in the family, then why not take them to The Box Hill Circuit in Surrey. It was one of the stages of the London Olympic Games, so why not test your stamina and see what times you can set compared to the likes of Sir Christopher Hoy and Victoria Pendleton. I forewarn you of steep climbs and spectacular views!
How about a more leisurely ride? If this sounds more your thing then try one of the many cycle routes in The Forest of Dean, located in Gloucestershire. This stunning, fairytale like forest, is absolutely ideal for a leisurely sunday morning bike ride and with trails to suit every kind of ability, you will certainly find something for all the members of your family. Why not bring a picnic and make a day of it?
Why not incorporate your cycling with a family weekend away? Take a memorable trip to The Isle of Arran in Scotland. Not only does the island have plenty of different cycle tracks, ranging from a gentle six mile one to a more exhilarating twenty-one mile trek, the beautiful island also offers its visitors the wonderful sites of, otters, seals, basking sharks and golden eagles.
The Staffordshire Peak District, is a wonderful location for children to enjoy a fabulous safe bike ride. In particular The Manifold Trek, which follows an old stretch of rail links. There are stunning views galore in this picturesque limestone gorge.
The majority of family-friendly cycle routes across the UK are safe and traffic free. They generally also have either picnic sites in secluded locations or inviting pubs and cafes. These are always located at the the beginning, the end or along the length of the cycle route.
