I started doing yoga last year and although I don’t practice as much as I should, I have found that it has many benefits and can really change the direction of your day. Take twenty minutes out of each day to breathe and stretch and you will definitely feel better about yourself, I guarantee it. These are my top ten reasons to do yoga.
IMPROVES STRESS LEVELS – Yoga is a great way to release stress. It has been proven than yoga helps to lower the levels of the stress hormone cortisol; it’s also great to do if you suffer from depression or anxiety.
GREAT FOR YOUR HEALTH – By doing yoga you can lower your blood pressure and heart rate, improve digestion and boost your immune system. So instead of an apple a day, why not try a session of yoga every day?
IMPROVES PAIN – A combination of yoga postures and meditation can improve pain. People with conditions such as cancer, arthritis and multiple sclerosis have found improvement with pain after practising yoga.
BREATHING – In the modern world, with daily stresses, technology and worries we sometimes forget to breathe, to really breathe. Yoga helps you to get in touch with your breathe. Learning to breathe deeply is important for your mental health and physical health.
FLEXIBILITY– Many people believe that to do yoga you have to be able to put your legs behind your head, you don’t. I was a gymnast and lost my flexibility, yoga has helped me gain that flexibility again. Yoga postures don’t have to be perfect, you just do what is right for you and you should never push your body too far or you can suffer injury. Yoga can also dramatically improve your posture.
SLEEP – It has been established that yoga can also improve your sleeping pattern. Doing a light session of yoga before you go to sleep can help your body fall into a natural session much quicker than if you do no exercise at all.
HAPPINESS – Yoga will make you happy. You may get your morning buzz from a cup of coffee or a sexy session with your partner, well yoga will make you feel just as wonderful.
WEIGHT CONTROL – Although yoga isn’t a cardiovascular exercise, practising regularly can increase your metabolism and help you lose a few of those unwanted calories.
TIME FOR YOU – When it’s just you, the yoga mat and possibly the women or man you are following on a yoga video you can focus on your body, your mind and forget about your to-do list or anything that might be on your mind. That time is for you, to get to know your body, to control your breath and to be in control of that moment.
MEDITATION – You can do the most difficult pose in yoga that makes you feel like a pretzel and it still wouldn’t mean anything with the focus and thought behind it. Yoga is a physical activity but meditation focuses on the mind. Spending five minutes of your day meditating can reduce stress and help you rid your body of negativity. Combining yoga and meditation will definitely improve all areas of your life.
Yoga isn’t a religion and you shouldn’t believe the stigma that you can’t do yoga if you’re not flexible or have any health problems. It doesn’t matter what shape or size you are – you can do yoga! I have a hip condition and anxiety and practising yoga has helped me with both. The stretching keeps my hip joints subtle and the meditation side of yoga helps to keep my anxiety under control. If you do one thing today then you should buy yourself a yoga mat, click on Youtube and start watching videos for beginners, it will change your life for the better, I promise you.
